Analysis of Land Use Change on Spring Conditions in Ngaliyan Sub-District, Semarang City

Abstract


Land-use change in peri-urban areas has become an important environmental issue due to its potential impact on local water resources, particularly springs that are still directly used by communities. This study aims to analyze land-use change and its implications for spring conditions in Ngaliyan Sub-District, Semarang City, during the period 2016 to 2024. The study employs a quantitative descriptive approach by integrating spatial analysis and field-based data. Land-use changes were identified through the interpretation of multi-temporal Google Earth imagery from 2016 and 2024, while the spatial distribution of springs was mapped to examine their relationship with surrounding land use. Primary data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 100 residents who use spring water for daily domestic purposes. The results indicate a reduction in vegetated areas accompanied by an expansion of settlement and industrial land, particularly in several village experiencing high development pressure. Areas with more intensive land-use change tend to exhibit greater vulnerability in spring water quantity and physical quality, whereas areas with relatively limited land-use change show more stable spring conditions. Springs located near residential areas are more susceptible to declines in water quantity and physical quality compared to those surrounded by vegetation and relatively well-preserved environmental conditions. These findings highlight the role of spatial land-use dynamics in influencing spring sustainability and emphasize the need for land management strategies that prioritize the protection of local water resources.
