The Effectiveness of Basic Life Support (BLS) Education on the Knowledge, Attitudes, and Skills of Junior High School Students

Abstract


Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a medical emergency that requires immediate assistance, yet knowledge and skills in Basic Life Support (BLS) among the community, including students, are still low. This study aimed to determine the effect of BLS training on the knowledge and skills of students at SMPN 48 Pekanbaru. This quantitative study used a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design involving 100 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaires and observation sheets and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed an increase in the mean knowledge score from 50.1 to 81.2, the mean attitude score from 26.88 to 34.29, and the mean skills score from 49.9 to 80.8. The Wilcoxon test results showed a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating that Basic Life Support (BLS) training had a significant effect on students' knowledge, attitudes, and skills. In conclusion, BLS training has a significant effect on improving the knowledge and skills of students at SMPN 48 Pekanbaru.
