Factors Associated with Low Use of Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) Among Women of Reproductive Age

Abstract

The low utilization of the Intrauterine Device (IUD) remains one of the challenges in family planning programs.
The IUD is a long-term contraceptive method that is effective, safe, and has a low failure rate. The selection of
IUD contraception is influenced by various factors, including knowledge, attitudes, husband’s support, and
sources of family planning information. This study aimed to analyze the factors associated with the low selection
of IUD contraceptive methods among women of reproductive age in the working area of Kabila Community
Health Center, Bone Bolango Regency. This study employed an analytical survey method with a cross-sectional
approach. The sample consisted of 96 women of reproductive age who were active family planning users, selected
using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using the Chi-Square test
with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that knowledge, attitudes, and husband’s support were
significantly associated with the selection of IUD contraceptive methods among women of reproductive age, with
p-values of 0.000 (p < 0.05). In addition, sources of family planning information were also significantly associated
with the selection of IUD contraceptive methods among women of reproductive age, with a p-value of 0.011 (p <
0.05). The study concluded that good knowledge, positive attitudes, strong husband’s support, and adequate
sources of family planning information can increase the likelihood of women of reproductive age choosing IUD
contraceptive methods. Therefore, these findings are expected to serve as input for healthcare services in
improving health promotion programs regarding IUD contraception.
