Abstract

Red betel is one of the efficacious medicinal plants. Based on scientific research, red betel leaves are antibacterial because they contain flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins and tannins. This research aims to make liquid soap preparations as an antiseptic and determine the ability of liquid soap preparations to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The type of research is laboratory experimental. Red betel leaf ethanol extract liquid soap formulations with concentrations of 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% were tested for irritation, organoleptic, pH, foam height and specific gravity. Tests carried out on Staphylococcus aureus bacteria used the diffusion method. The results of liquid soap quality testing meet the requirements according to the standards set by SNI. The observation results obtained with the average inhibition zone for a concentration of 2.5% were 15.30 mm, 5% was 15.60 mm, 7.5% was 16.86 mm, positive control was 30.86 mm, while the control negative, no inhibition zone is formed. The conclusion of this research is that red betel leaf extract (Piper crocatum Riuz & Pav.) has inhibitory power against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, namely concentrations of 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% are in the strong category. It is recommended that future researchers test the antibacterial activity of red betel leaf extract against other types of bacteria.
