Abstract

The availability of adequate public facilities and green open spaces (GOS) is a critical factor in supporting quality of life and environmental sustainability in rural areas. Tegalsari Village, located in Kepanjen District, Malang Regency, faces limited sports facilities and a lack of public spaces that can accommodate social and environmental activities. These conditions are exacerbated by recurrent waterlogging during the rainy season due to suboptimal natural drainage. This community service program aims to (1) develop an integrated public facility consisting of a football field and GOS that meet community needs, (2) enhance community participation and capacity in the planning and management of village infrastructure, and (3) optimize the use of local resources through a self-help–based development approach. The implementation methods included needs identification through field surveys and focus group discussions, collaborative design planning, and community-driven construction processes. The program resulted in the establishment of an 80×54-meter football field and a 67×17-meter GOS equipped with biopore-based natural drainage and the planting of 25 local shade trees. Evaluation findings indicate a 65% increase in community utilization of the facilities and a 40% reduction in waterlogging during the rainy season. These outcomes demonstrate that participatory approaches and the utilization of local resources are effective in developing rural public infrastructure without dependence on external funding. This model can be adopted in other rural areas with similar characteristics to support sustainable development.
