Abstract

Geological mapping fieldwork is an important learning activity for students in geology and mining-related programs. However, field conditions may expose participants to hazards such as unstable rock, steep slopes, weather changes, heat stress, wildlife, slips and falls, traffic, and improper use of field equipment. This article discusses practical measures to prevent occupational accidents among students during geological mapping. The approach is a descriptive literature review and a structured analysis of fieldwork stages, including planning, hazard identification, risk assessment, implementation of controls, supervision, and emergency response. The proposed controls include pre-field safety briefings, route and weather planning, use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), a buddy system, communication procedures, safe sampling practices, and first-aid readiness. The article also presents a hazard-control matrix that can be adapted by lecturers and field coordinators. Prevention is most effective when safety is integrated into every stage of the activity rather than treated as a separate administrative requirement. The recommendations are expected to support safer, more disciplined, and more effective geological mapping fieldwork.
