The Comparison of Bacterial Number in The Oral Cavity Before and After Toothbrushing
Abstract
Mouth is the first organ in the process of digesting food that used to destroy food. The mouth is a vulnerable place and often suffers from infection because of the entry of harmful agents such as microorganisms and carcinogenic agents. Bacteria can be found in the mouth because of factors that support bacterial growth, such as food residue, temperature, and pH. The examples of bacteria in the oral cavity are Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Klebsiela, Lactobacillus, and Veillonella. Brushing teeth can reduce or inhibit bacteria in the mouth by cleaning mouth from food residue so that the fermentation doesn't take too long. The purpose of this study was to find out the comparison between the number of bacteria in the mouth before and after brushing teeth. The research design used cross-sectional sampling, while data collection techniques used purposive sampling. The sample for this study consisted of 39 respondents. The analysis of normality test used Shapiro-Wilk, and the data hypothesis test used the Wilcoxon signed rank test with a sig value of 0.000. The results showed mean colony results before brushing teeth 7x105 CFU/ml and after 7x103 CFU/ml. The conclusion of this study’s results was that there was a significant comparison between before and after toothbrushing.
