Penentuan Nilai SPF Ekstrak Bunga Kecombrang (Etlingera elatior) Secara In Vitro

Abstract


Indonesia is located on the equator which allows exposure to high intensity sunlight. Sun exposure can cause damage to the skin due to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Using sunscreen is one effort that can be made to protect the skin from the detrimental effects caused by UV radiation. The ability of a sunscreen to protect the skin is expressed by the Sun Protection Factor (SPF). Sunscreens with chemical active substances are known to cause certain side effects, therefore other alternatives are needed, one of which is plant-based. The kecombrang flower (Etlingera elatior) is a plant that is quite widespread in Indonesia. Combrang flowers contain flavonoid compounds, so they have the potential to be a natural sunscreen agent. This research aimed to determine the SPF value of kecombrang flower extract using methanol, 70% ethanol and n-hexane as solvents. The results obtained from methanol, 70% ethanol and n-hexane extracts had SPF values at a concentration of 1% in the very high category. This research concludes that the highest SPF test was obtained at a concentration of 1% 70% ethanol extract of kecombrang flowers with a very high SPF category, namely 106.8 ± 1.25.
