Analisis Merkuri (Hg) Air Sungai Hilir dampak Pertambangan Emas Tradisional Bulagidun

Abstract


Traditional gold mining activities commonly use mercury (Hg) in the amalgamation process to extract gold from ore materials. Uncontrolled mercury use has the potential to contaminate water bodies, particularly in downstream river sections where mining waste tends to accumulate. This study aimed to analyze mercury concentrations in downstream river water within the traditional gold mining area of Bulagidun, Central Sulawesi. River water samples were collected using a purposive sampling method at downstream locations situated below the mining activities. Mercury analysis was conducted using the Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (CV-AAS) method at the Regional Health Laboratory of Gorontalo Province. The results showed that the average mercury concentration in downstream river water was 0.0108 mg/L, exceeding the Class II water quality standard established by the Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia Number 22 of 2021, which is 0.002 mg/L. The elevated mercury concentration in the downstream section is presumed to result from the accumulation of gold-processing waste transported by river flow from the mining area. These findings indicate that traditional gold mining activities in Bulagidun have contributed to mercury contamination in downstream waters. Therefore, improved mining waste management practices and regular environmental monitoring are necessary to minimize the risk of further environmental pollution.
