Abstract

The Luwu Raya region, South Sulawesi, is one of the most flash flood-prone areas in Indonesia.Recent bibliometric reviews indicate a lack of experimental research examining the effectivenessof WebGIS-based educational interventions in this region. This study evaluates the impact of WebGIS-based flood hazard map learning on flood spatial literacy and evacuation preparedness, tests the mediating role of spatial literacy, and examines the influence of residential spatial proximity. Using a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design, this study included 120 eleventh-grade students (n = 60 per group) were selected from four hazard-zone schools (two schools assigned to the experimental group and two to the control group). The experimental group completed six WebGIS sessions using authentic data (inaRISK, DEMNAS, and DIBI). The results indicated that WebGIS significantly improved both spatial literacy (d = 2.72) and evacuation preparedness (d = 3.07). Path analysis revealed that spatial literacy did not mediate this relationship (p = 0.430). Instead, WebGIS exerted a direct and dominant effect on preparedness. Furthermore, ANCOVA indicated that the intervention effect on preparedness remained robust after controlling for students’ baseline ability and residential proximity to the hazard source. These findings suggest that WebGIS may operate through visual risk immersion, offering a robust and inclusive pedagogical model for disaster risk reduction education
